Fall 2023 Orientation, Advisement & Registration

OAR Overview

Starting early March 2023, students that have confirmed their enrollment will be invited to select an OAR date. Orientation, Advisement & Registration is required for all new students to complete. Incoming Freshmen are required to attend the hybrid program which includes a day-long, in-person Orientation program and virtual Advisement & Registration. Transfer students will have the option to participate in a virtual only OAR program on May 31, or any of the hybrid programs in July and August.

OAR Date Selection

OAR dates will start as early as May 31 for Transfer Students or June 7 for Freshmen and primarily take place in  June with a few dates in July and August (to be opened later in the year).

International Student OAR will take place August 21-24, 2023 on-campus. Students will be communicated with by International Student Services. More information can be found on the International Student Services orientation website

      Check your UMD email regularly

      Staying connected and informed will help you be successful at UMD. Email is the official method of communication at UMD and is where you'll get notes from your professors, learn about grades, be notified about information regarding your student aid and record. Please get in the habit of checking your UMD email regularly.

      Complete all task lists on your Orientation Portal

      In your Orientation Portal, you will find a series of steps for you to complete prior to your Orientation experience. Each of these steps will better prepare you for a smooth OAR process and ensure you aren’t behind when registering for classes and starting your first semester!

      Submit your FAFSA if you're applying for financial aid

      The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required to be considered for federal grants, state grants, federal loans, and institutional aid. If you haven’t already done so, you (and your family) should complete and submit the FAFSA now. The FAFSA code for UMD is 002388.

      Complete Additional Documentation

      After UMD receives your FAFSA, you'll be notified by mail or your UMD email account if additional documentation is needed to process your financial aid. You can monitor your progress in the My Finances tab of MyU. See “Step 2” in the Financial Aid section to view your To Do List

      We want you and your family to have all the information you need to plan around the investment in a college degree. You can also make an appointment with our Financial Aid Educator, Carl Huber to help you navigate the process or explore resources available to you by scheduling a time that works best for you.

      Complete Immunization Records Requirements

      State Required Immunizations

      All students (except for those who graduated from a Minnesota high school in the year 1997 or later) must have immunization documentation on file at Health Services. Students must turn in their Immunization Record Form in order to register for classes. A one-semester grace period will be allowed in cases of non-compliance. If the immunization record is not submitted prior to second semester, a hold will be placed on a student's record, and they will be unable to register for classes.

      COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement 

      As announced by President Gabel and approved by the Board of Regents, the COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement is now in effect for all enrolled University of Minnesota students. New Students will be required to complete the Vaccination records process and will be communicated via their UMD Email address with instructions.

      Consider your course placement

      Proper course placement is important. We recommend students take a look at our course placement website. In particular, some majors, especially those that are STEM based, have math requirements and it is strongly recommended that students in those majors have a math placement method on record.

      Submit your official final transcripts

      If you are taking classes at another post-secondary institution and want the credits to be reflected on your record in time for OAR, we recommend that you contact the school’s registrar’s office and request that your official transcripts be mailed directly to:

      Alternatively, the registrar at your current institution can email your official transcript to [email protected].

      Note: if you send official transcripts prior to current semester grades to be posted, you will also need to submit another official transcript once grades are posted. Another thing to note, that all previous transcripts whether the credits transfer to UMD or not must be sent to UMD.

      Submit Advanced Placement and/or International Baccalaureate exam scores

      UMD awards credit for scores of 3 or higher on College Board Advanced Placement (AP) exams.  If you haven’t done so, send your scores to UMD through College Board. Visit the College Board website for more information on submitting your scores.

      UMD Awards credit for higher level courses with a 5 or higher score on the International Baccalaureate exams. You should request scores to be sent from IB directly to UMD.
